I took the famous train ride in Sri Lanka

Imagine standing at the edge of the door of a moving train, absorbing the scintillating views of lush tea estates through your eyes, not a speck of dust settling on your eyelashes, just a cool breeze greeting your face. It's a view unlike anything you've seen. It is dreamy. It is tangible. It is breathtaking!

The train journey from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya is one of the most visually appealing rides in the world. You might have seen a lot of Instagram posts of couples dangling from the door of a moving train amidst green tea estates, sealing their momentary pretence with a kiss (please do not try it, it is risky). Yes, I am talking about that train ride. And I will share a few tips on how to get the best experience of it.

There are several trains that run from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya. We rode the Ella Odyssey train by booking our seats a day in advance at the Kandy railway station. The railway system in Sri Lanka is impeccable! They are extremely affordable and one of the widely used public transports in the country.

Try booking a first class ticket for the train ride. We paid about 3,000 LKR which is approximately around 600 INR. The train ride will be for about 2.5 hours but trust me, time will freeze as you embark on this journey.

Benefits of booking the Ella Odyssey train:

  1. It is a relatively new train. So, it's sparkling clean
  2. A first class compartment is fully air conditioned
  3. There will be hardly any people, empty seats for stretching if you'd like ;)
  4. You will have ample time to stand by the door and enjoy the views
💡
Please don't hang from the doors. Your head might get struck by a pole

The Ella Odyssey train stops at Nanu Oya station (Nuwara Eliya) and continues its journey to Ella. Those who wish to get down at the Nanu Oya station and explore Nuwara Eliya, can do so. Just make sure you buy the right ticket at the start of your journey and specify the name of the station correctly.
